ANTS

There are over 700 species of ants in the United States such as sugar ants, fire ants, carpenter ants and more. Although red and black ants do not carry communicable diseases, most people still find them unappealing and annoying. In fact, ants are considered to be the number one pest problem in the country.

Since ants can fit through nearly any crack or crevice, it is easy for them to invade your home. Ants are attracted to sweet foods, but will consume anything that is left out. When an ant scout discovers a source of food, they leave an invisible scent trail for other ants to follow. This is why you often see ants walking back and forth along the same path.

WHERE ANTS ARE FOUND

Ants live in all kinds of environments, including yards, dead trees, wall spaces and under crawl spaces. The biggest indicator of an infestation is actually seeing ants in your home.

Aside from being a nuisance, there are several ants in the South that can be destructive to property, like carpenter ants. Although carpenter ants do not eat wood, they will cut passageways through wood. Overtime, this can damage the stability of a structure. Seeing a sawdust like residue in the home is a good indicator of a carpenter ant invasion.

HOW TO KEEP ANTS OUT

Keeping a neat and tidy home can help discourage ants from visiting, but not completely prevent them from entering. Removing dead and decaying wood from your property can also reduce the risks of an infestation of carpenter ants. Aside from chemical treatments, there is really no way to keep fire ants from building colonies in the yard.

Although there are many over the counter pesticides labeled for ant control, most of them just eradicate the ants you see while leaving the greater colony intact after spraying for ants. If you suspect an ant infestation in your home or on your property, give us a call right away.
