SPIDERS

Spiders seem to be everywhere right now. With cooler temperatures and shorter days, spiders are extra busy eating as much as possible and laying eggs before winter. Homeowners are reporting an abundance of spiders both in yards and houses weither that be American house spiders or brown recluse spider nests.

In addition to looking for water, spiders are looking for warmth. With the advent of cool fall weather, spiders make the transition from outdoor creatures to indoor ones. Homeowners often don’t notice the abundance of spiders in and around their home until later in the summer when they have gotten bigger. Bigger spiders weave bigger webs, making them much easier to see. Additionally, cooler weather brings early morning dew which clings to webs. As the sun’s rays reflect off the shimmering, dew-encrusted strands of all the funnel webs in a yard, homeowners might think an army of spiders moved in overnight.

Orb spiders create the lovely, circular webs that people generally associate with spiders. Those webs can be a foot or more in diameter now. Despite the size and seeming abundance of spiders and their webs, most of these spiders are not of concern to humans.

Most spiders found inside actually provide a service by eating insects which are bothersome to people. However, there are two spiders which do pose health concerns. These are the black widow and brown recluse. Homeowners are reporting more sightings of brown recluses, brown recluse nests, and black widows. Children and the elderly are most at risk for severe complications from these spider bites. Concerned homeowners should call a professional pest control or extermination company.
